Sussex Surplus is a community embedded social enterprise taking fresh and surplus food in danger of being wasted and transforming it into long-life products and tasty meals. We run gleaning days across Sussex, sell jars of soup wholesale to independent shops, feed the community at our weekly café in East Brighton each Thursday and provide catering services on request. Get in touch to stock our soup or have us cater your upcoming event!
social value from surplus Food
Each year on UK farms, 5 million tonnes of fresh produce goes to waste. We have relationships with local growers who donate their unsellable surplus for us to turn it into long-life products. We believe we can secure nutritious and delicious food for everyone in our community, without trashing our planet. In the process we want to create meaningful entry-level paid opportunities for young people facing barriers to employment.
no food should go to waste
Our work in numbers
14,136

2.7kg
of emissions saved from every 1kg of fresh food rescued. The food we rescued in 2025 alone equates to saving 38 tonnes of CO2.
176
volunteer attendees in 2025 at 30 gleans and pack-house collections, improving physical and mental health as well as understanding of local food production.

We bring community organisations, farmers and volunteers together to harvest and redirect farm-level surplus to community food and food aid organisations. Sign up to be notified of upcoming gleaning days and join us in the fields for a nourishing day of harvesting!
Host a glean
If you own or work on a farm, we’d love to collaborate! At no cost to you we harvest and pack unsellable produce from the farm and transport it to non-profit projects that feed people facing food poverty. Whether it’s a few crates of produce or several tonnes of perishables, let’s connect!
