Join our team as a Community Kitchen Trainee

About the Role

We are looking for an enthusiastic, determined and passionate Community Kitchen Trainee to join our team for a 5 month work placement based in our kitchen in East Brighton. Training will be provided and no experience is necessary, although we’d love to see prior interest in food or cookery and a desire to help others in the community. We will work with the successful candidates to arrange a work pattern that is mutually convenient and manageable. 

Pay £12.60 per hour (Real Living Wage)

Hours 12-15 hours per week (Wednesdays & Thursdays with some variability)

Location Bristol Estate Community Room and on site as per events

Scope of Job 

  • Working alongside the team to complete daily kitchen tasks, including making products with surplus produce. Washing, chopping, cooking, portioning and packing food in our community kitchen in the Bristol Estate Community Room, East Brighton  

  • Learning how a community kitchen operates and applying safe, hygienic working practices 

  • Serving food in our community cafe - we will provide training in customer service

  • Occasional visits to local farms to glean (pick) fresh fruit and veg at risk of going to waste 

  • Engaging with training and learning materials on sustainability in the community food sector

Who we are looking for 

The successful candidate will: 

  • Have an interest in and enthusiasm for cookery and food

  • Have an interest in contributing to making healthy, affordable, culturally appropriate and sustainable food more accessible in the local community 

  • Have good communication and teamwork abilities 

  • Be enthusiastic, hardworking and keen to learn

  • Physically fit and able to work both in a kitchen and occasionally outdoors. We are a Disability Confident employer and are willing to make reasonable adjustments

  • Have an existing connection to the East Brighton community

Eligibility

  • You must be aged 18-24 years old 

  • You must be legally entitled to work in the UK
